“What documents do you need for a divorce case?

Simple question, give me all you got. I don’t know from the onset what the issues are going to be specifically, but generally I know they’re going to focus on finances, so I’d like to see tax returns. I’d like to see bank statements. I’d like to see brokerage statements.

If there’s children, there may be issues about how a child is being cared for by the other parent, so report cards, attendance records, are they making their doctors’ appointments? Things like that.

And what if there’s an allegation of domestic violence? I hate to say it, but I’d like to see pictures that might evidence that. So threats in text messages, bruising, other injuries that may have been occasioned by the other spouse.

These are not nice things to talk about, but if you want to prepare for a divorce you need to have your documents in order.
